Greyhounds race to D.C. for matchup with the Hoyas

GLIDE
WHAT ROCKS!

VS.

It's been a few days Hoynation and friends.  For some reason it seemed like an eternity until gameday this time.  I don't know why it felt like this, maybe I'm just anxious for the game.  But one thing I could say is I'm still focused.  The Hoya Deam Season continues in full fashion when the Loyola Greyhounds (4-5) race into town.  The Greyhounds are out of the Metro Athletic Association Conference and are (0-2) in conference play so far this season, but have win over UMBC, Darthmouth, Morgan State U, and Mount St. Mary's.  Four year varsity letter senior Jamal Barney leads the Greyhounds in scoring at (11.8) pts. per outing.

On a Hoya note, the mighty Hoyas (10-1) are seeking their 11th win of the season against the Greyhounds.  Although Georgetown's one lost has come agaisnt the Temple Owls, they rebounded with a recent big win over Appalacian State last week in fast breaking fashion.  I'm sure the Hoyas are looking forward to the challenge tommorrow against the Loyola Greyhounds out of Baltimore City.  Senior Austin Freeman (18.9 pts.) leads the Hoyas in scoring.  The Hoyas have been playing great team basketball all season and will continue to do so one game at a time.  The Hoyas remained focused on their dream will play with a sense of urgency.  Their intensity will be at a high against Loyola and will be a joy to watch and of course Hoyanation and friends I know you'll cheering the boys on!

Hoyas get the "redemption" and go full steam ahead on the tracks with a big victory over the Mountaineer 89-60

HIGHER HOYAS, HIGHER
CREED

First off, I have to start off saying, it felt gooooooood to be home after going to Temple U in Philadelphia hearing those Temple fans.  You really have a big appreciation of your team when they play at home.  I took it all in today and enjoyed the Hoya moments from the students, fans, Hoya band, the tee shirts being shot out into the crowd.  Oh, by the way Temple shoots out Oscar Meyer hot dogs instead of tee shirts. Yes, hotdogs!  Now who in the heck would want a hotdog shot out at them, only at Temple, lol.

Now if it was hoagie, then it would be different story.  Naw, just kidding.  I don't like food shot out at me period, lol.   I did get an italian hoagie from Johnny Johns on campus when I went to the Philly, I could not go to Philadelphia and not get a hoagie.  I went to Philly to see my Hoyas and get a hoagie.  You probably saw me I had on my Georgetown (Spike Lee) sweatshirt lol.

Okay enough of that!  Hoyanation and friends, the Hoyas (9-1) "redeemed" themselves today in "get back up and dust yourself off way."  Also, part of the "Hoya Dream Season" is about overcoming adversity.  The smooth and great defensive play of junior Jason Clark 15 pts. gave him the lead today and senior Austin Freeman, 14 pts. for the mighty Hoyas.

Clark shut down Appalacian's leading scorer Donald Sims 27 pts per outing, and he is also the second leading scorer in the land in D1 ball.  “We knew we just had to be aggressive with Sims,” Clark said.  “We knew we couldn’t let him get his shots off.  We had to come to him and bring the defense to him.  I think being aggressive with him kind of helped.”
Hoya point senior point guard Chris Wright matched a career high with 12 assists for the Hoyas.

“Coach put an emphasis at halftime on getting three stops in a row at the beginning of the second half, and that’s something we wanted to do,” Wright said.  “When we get into transition, it’s very hard to stop us because we have so many options.”

I think the biggest thing about the game was the return of freshman Moses "Vice-Grip" Ayegba.  Ayegba’s arrival on the court drew loud cheers from the crowd, which included two Georgetown students dressed in biblical garb and long, fake beards holding “Free Moses” signs.  I tried to get photos of them outside the Verizon Center, but it was raining and I don't they think they were up to to taking photos in the rain, lol.

The Hoyas look like a locomotive train clicking on all cylinders today. Whatever the case was the Hoyas got back on the tracks and hey never got derailed. In a sense, winners never lose, when they get back up and keep it moving.

Well, anyway I had big fun at the game cheering my Hoyas on from behind the bench.  After all, I am after Georgetown's #1 fan according to Coach Thompson, so I'll take it, I don't mind at all.  Let's keep rolling Hoyanation and friends and cheer and encourage our Hoyas team on win or lose because...

Hoyas look to redeem team in matchup at home against Appalacian State U

NO QUITTER, GO GETTER

GET IT BACK HOYAS!

VS.

It's "redemption" time for the Hoyas (8-1) as they seek to get a home win against Appalacian State Mountaineers.  Hoyanation and friends, the Hoyas are coming off of a tough loss on the road against the Temple Owls.  The game was all I thought it would be and some.  Very close!  Of course, I didn't like the outcome, but as they say that's the way the ball bounces.  All this game did is make the Hoyas more focused and tougher in knowing they can come back and win.  It's all about overcoming adversity in the time of need, and I think the Hoyas are up and ready for the challenge.  “That was a real tough atmosphere,” guard Chris Wright said.  “Our league is the same way, so I think a loss like this will help us.”

Appalachian State (3-3) will be Georgetown’s sixth opponent picked to win its conference or a division within its conference  this season, so this team is no cupcake either.  The Hoyas will come out focused with energy and play with a "sense of urgency."  Leading scorers for both teams are Austin Freeman (Hoyas) at 19.4 pts. Donald Sims (Mountaineers) at 27.0 pts.  The Mountaineers have had some quality wins this season against Samford, Tulsa and Montreat, whoever Montreat is, lol.  Their losses came from Vanderbilt, Chatanooga and a 2 point loss to SEC Mississippi State.

Hoyanation, if part of the "Hoya Dream Season" is about overcoming "adversity", then I can deal with it because that's what life is all about for most,  "overcoming the odds."

By the ay Hoyanation and friends I"m here at the National High School Showcase at DeMatha High School about to watch our future Hoya Mikael Hopkins in action.  I'll let everyone know how he does in my next blog after the Hoya game Sunday evening.  I also tweeted/facebook the game, so you can go back and check it out.

Temple wins the slugfest against the Hoyas in Philly 68-65

GET BACK UP  HOYAS!
T. I. FEAT CHRIS BROWN

HOYAS YOU'RE STILL GONNA BE #1
KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!
Glide

I guess you could say this was another tough test on the road  in a hostile environment for the Hoyas (8-1).  Their test came up short by 3 points.  At tipoff, Temple (6-2) came out of the gates quickly on the Hoyas scoring 3 straight baskets.  After, Georgetown came roaring and was only down by one point early in the game.  Georgetown played from behind the whole first half, but never gave up, still grinding through Temple's rough terrain of defense with the score at the half Temple 39-32 .

The Hoyas were still grinding through Temple's rough terrain of defense.  The Hoyas did a great job of rebounding in the first half on the defensive end not allowing the Owls second chance baskets, but it was the turnovers on the offensive end in the first half that hurt the Hoyas.

The second half was exhilerating with the two teams going back, but with Hoyas still remained behind until  Chris Wright stole a pass and scored on a fastbreak layup.  Then Wright made two free throws to tie it at 56.  Ramon Moore, who scored a career game high 31 pts., answered back with a 3 point dagger wide open in the left corner to put his team up 59-56.  “I try not to let the big stage faze me,” Moore said. “I’ve always been calm playing basketball. I’ve been doing it my whole life.”  The Hoyas and Owls battle back and forth, with the Owls Rahlir Jefferson scoring on a putbback to put his team up 61-56.  Hoyas' Julian Vaughn and Chris Wright stepped up and came within one point 66-65.  Owl's Fernandez missed a 3 with the shot clock expiring, and the Hoyas got the rebound with 15 seconds left.

Chris Wright pushing the ball up the court and passed the ball to Hollis Thompson giving Georgetown a chance to win it at the end but Thompson’s shot rimmed out and the Owls grabbed the rebound.  Austin Freeman fouled with 2 seconds and the Owls made two free throws to end the game.  Jason Clark lead the Hoyas with 15 points.  “That was a real tough atmosphere,” Wright said. “Our league is the same way, so I think a loss like this will help us.”  I think so, a "TOUGH" loss like this early during the season on the road in a hostile enviornment can only make the Hoyas "TOUGHER!"

The Mighty Hoyas Glide up to "The City of Brotherly Love" to play the Temple Owls

WE READY TEMPLE!
HOYAS!

vs.

So far, it's been a challenging season for the mighty Georgetown Hoyas,  and they have passed all tests with flying colors.  Hoyanation and friends, the Hoyas (8-0) glide to the City of Philadelphia to take on Atlantic 10 Conference's Temple Owls (5-2).  The Hoyas have been playing nearly perfect basketball, and look to be a "major threat" this season in the college basketball world.  Senior Austin Freeman leads the Hoyas at (20.3 pts. per outing) and senior Julian Vaughn, leads the Hoyas in rebounding at (6.9) a game.

Sophomore Vee Sanford is leading the Hoyas in three categories, (field goal pct. 62.5, free throws 100.0, and  3's at 66.7 pct.). Senior Chris Wright is the leader in assists for the Hoyas at (6.8 per game and steals at 2.1 pg).

"I think in general, as a team, we want to create a lot of our offense off of our defense,” Wright said. “I think if we get a lot of steals and put a lot of pressure on people on the court, it will be to our advantage.”

The Hoyas are coming out of their finals, but are taking their season and college life one step at a time. This indeed helps them to understand life through education and basketball.  I think this is a great thing for our Hoyas with such a bright future and future leaders of our country in some capacity one way or the other.

The Owls shared last season's regular season title with Xavier, both were 14-2. The Owls were two time defenders of the A10 tourney championship and their last conference championship win was over the Richmond Spiders 56-52 in 2010.  With an appearance in the NCAA's the last two years, the Owls lost to Arizona State 2009 and Cornell 2010 in both first rounds of the tournament.  Temple's last win came against Maryland 64-61 in Washington, DC.  This season the Owls are undefeated at home at (2-0).  Ramone Moore leads Temple in scoring at (12.3 pts.)  Lavoy Allen is the leading rebounder at (6.9) game for the Owls.

The city of Philadelphia  is known for its hoagies, scrapple, soft pretzels, water ice, Tastykake, and is home to the Philly cheesesteak.  Pat's King of Steaks is The First and The Originator of the Philly Steak and Cheesesteak in Philadelphia http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/.

Hoyas press and "TRAP" the Blue Aggies into another big nonconference 68-51 victory

HOYA FUNK EXPRESS!
TROUBLE FUNK EXPRESS
HOYA SAXA!
D.C. IS OUR PLAYGROUND!

Hoyanation and friends, I heard a big basketball anaylst and a few folks talking about a this being a "trap game" for the Hoyas.  I said to myself, "why would they want to mess everything up talking negative?"   The Hoyas have been winning and have just won a really big game on the road in Kansas City, Missouri against the #11 Missouri Tigers in a slugfest!  So, why all of a sudden the Hoyas just lay down their weapons.  This leaves me shaking my head especially hearing some Hoya fans talking this trash about a "trap game."  The only thing that was "trapped" today was the Utah State Blue Aggies.

If you're a true blue and grayer you should be a yeahsayer not a naysayer.  Wow, I just made that up, lol, but yes, stay positive an encourage our Hoyas.  This is what they need to hear.  Let the opposer's talking this mess, not Hoya fans.  “There’s no space in there for trap games, right?” Thompson III said. “With this preseason schedule, hopefully it’ll develop that hardness, that mindset” for the Big East schedule.

Once again, I had a chance to see our Hoyas (8-0) run in the locker room before tip off and there was no doubt in my mind they were ready!  The Hoyas are "clearly" on a mission.  I knew this would be a good game. and it was more so in the first half with the Utah State Blue Aggies (5-2) getting buckets inside the paint trying to get our bigs in foul trouble.  Julian Vaughn had to sit with two early fouls.  It seems the fouls were going one way against the Hoyas for a moment there, until the mighty Hoyas realized they had to take this game, so they "pressed" on.  The Hoyas used ferocious press to end the half.

The two teams battled back and forth all the way to halftime, but the Hoyas got the best of the Blue Aggies going into locker with score 33-29.  Once the Hoyas came out of the locker, it was basically, "press and trap" time.  I'll tell you it was a sight to see, my type of basketball.  Hoyaball!  The Hoyas were everywhere, I mean everywhere, wow!  The Hoyas dug deep down in the trenches and came out with the big win, by playing tough, hard nosed team basketball.  The Aggies took away 3 point shot, the Hoyas scored in the paint.  What can you say when your team is versatile like this.  “They did a terrific job of taking away the 3's.  We didn’t get that many open looks,” Thompson said.  “Our team has done and is doing a good job of taking what the defense gives you.  We don’t have to make the 3s to win games.”

"I think we have the pieces that we can take what the defense gives us," Thompson said. "I thought we did a good job of throwing it in, getting into the paint, got their bigs in foul trouble, which was a key part of the game.  I think we have a versatile team, coach John Thompson III said."

“If you told me they were only going to make a couple of 3's, I would have told you we were going to be right there.  Unfortunately, they shot a ton of free throws,” Morrill said. “We had some harebrained fouls, some harebrained passes..  The credit goes to Georgetown for getting us rattled.”

"We have guys that can really aggressive and can attack the basket, and today was a little different," guard Chris Wright (21 points) said. "They were really playing us around the 3-point line, so we had to penetrate and get in gaps. I think there's multiple ways we can be effective on the offensive end, and as long as our defense is solid, I think we'll be all right."

Hoyas return to action on Saturday and get ready for the Smackdown against the Utah State Aggies

GET READY FOR THE SMACKDOWN!
THOUSAND FOOT KRUTCH
LET'S GO HOYAS!

VS.

I guess you could say it's time to come down off of this Hoyamania high.  It was definitely hard too, but I've finally came back down to a Hoyaland high.  Call it what you want because November Madness is just what it was, November Madness, right unitl the last day of that month.  Most college basketball analyst say, the Hoya/Missouri game was the best college basketball game played so far this season, and some also said it was the favorite.  Believe it or not those same analyst said it was the "best" college basketball game ever played during the month of November.    “We want to enjoy the win,” Hoyas point guard Chris Wright said. “But we can’t make it out to be any bigger picture than it is.”

“I think it’s important for this team to stay even keeled,” Wright said. “We’ve been in situations where we’ve won big games early. We can either go up or down. We just need to get back to work. This was just another win.” The Hoyas 7-0, refocus on the Hoya Dream Season and gear up to play the Aggies of Utah State in another tough test nonconference match-up at home, in the Verizon Center, Washington D.C. on Saturday 12 pm.  Utah State come into D.C. with a 5-1 (2-1 on the road) record.

“It was two teams really going after it.  It's was like March,” Missouri coach Mike Anderson said. “The thing that came back to haunt us is that they’re veterans.  Those older guys, they’ve been through wars.”  I totally agree with that statement, the mighty Hoyas have been through the Big East wars also.  “We have a tough team,” Thompson III said. “It doesn’t surprise us that we were able to bounce back.”

The Aggies recent winners of 4 straight last win was Wednesday against Denver U 61-53.  Their only loss was against ranked opponet #23 BYU.  The Aggies leading scorer is Yai Wesley 15.3 pts.

For the mighty Hoyas, senior Austin Freeman is averaging 21.7 pts.  Senior lead point guard Chris Wright is leading the Hoyas in assists at 7.4 a game.  Senior Julian Vaughn is leading in rebounds at 7.2 pe game.  Hoyanation and friends the Hoyas know it's still a early season and are not feeding into the hype.  They still have to take things one step at a time.

As Coach John Thompson III says, "we're still a work in progress,", and this is true, so let's not forget.  Expectations can be something else if you know what I mean.  People have their expectations at high levels, but the Hoyas have to maintain steadiness, humbleness and approach each practice and game with a "sense of urgency."  Although the Hoyas have past these great nonconference tests so far, they still know they have to play hard, play smart and have fun and live their dream.  The "Hoya Dream Season" is in full effect!  The Hoyas are focused.

Hoyas "glide" to the finish line with a thrilling 111-102 win in the John McLendon Classic "Hoya Dream Season!"

TOUGHER THAN LEATHER
HOYAS!

Legendary John McLendon an advisor to the inventor of basketball James NaismithBook called "Breaking Through"

This game was everything I thought it would be from start to finish in the John McLendon Classic.  Oh, what a thriller!  The Hoyas win on the road in a very tough, hostile environment in overtime 111-102.  These two teams had so much to play for and both teams proved it.  I would really like to thank Coach Thompson and staff for scheduling these tough non-conference games.  This was the biggest test for the Hoyas (7-0) against the Missouri Tigers (6-1).  The Hoyas came out the gates fast with good leads, but by the half the Tigers closed in the on the Hoyas 54-47.   Austin Freeman had the hot hand early on once again leading his team in scoring with 31 points in this affair.

The kid from Missouri, Marcus Denmon, (27 pts.) kept the Tigers in the game.  He was 6 for 7 and missed only one of five from beyond the arc in the first half.  "It felt like eventually they would stop making shots because we were out there rotating and we were playing really hard," Denmon said. "Give credit to Georgetown because they made shots. It was early when we got down, and we stayed the course and worked hard and finally chipped the lead away and took the lead. I felt we had the game in control, but at the end you have to finish games with defense and free throws."

Denmon and his teammates were tough, and I really tip my hat to their team.  The Missouri Tigers are a great team and will be a force in the Big 12 Conference.

The Hoyas made all of their free throws (18-18).  As they say, free throws wins championships.  Once again, Chris Wright (21 pts.), lead his team in double digit assists (10) and was (9-9) from the free throw line.  Wright so saved the day, by hitting the big money shot with (0.3) seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.  Wright took a quick look at the small Georgetown fan section at the Sprint Center, flexed his arms and was embraced by a group of teammates. “They had some guys right up on me, it was a tough shot.” Wright said.  Asked if he had ever hit a bigger shot than the one that forced OT, he simply said “Nawwwwww

Hoyanation and friends, my other Hoya hero, and I think everyone else's too hero of the day, was the smooth, calm junior Jason "Silky Smooth" Clark, (26 pts.) 9 points coming in waves in overtime play.  Clark shot the lights out when the Hoyas needed him to.  Early on, and not realizing he was only 1 for 6 from the 3-point line in regulation his teammates told him to keep shooting. "They have confidence in me, so I kept shooting, said the smooth, confident Clark."

My unsung hero of the game, Henry "Big Hank" Sims, (10 pts., 7 rebs., 2 assists) continues to be force in the paint along with senior forward Julian "JuJu" Vaughn.  His athletic dunks just amaze me everytime.  I love when the guards penetrate and find Henry and give him the alley oops, lol.  Good job Markel Starks!  Keep moving right along and shut them critics up Henry and Julian, yessssss.  You got your boys Nate "Tough Guy" Lubick, Jerrelle "Strongman" Benimon, and just think Big Moses "Vice Grip" Ayegba waiting in the wings.  Tell em Hoyas, "they ain't seen nothing yet."

Jason "Smooth" Clark knocking a big 3 in overtime, he had 26 points in overtime win
11/30/10

"Georgetown struck the biggest blow early, down 18, but our guys just scratched and clawed and got the game to seven points at halftime," Missouri coach Mike Anderson said. "They shot the ball unbelievable. Anytime you go 18 for 18 from the free throw line and you've got to go to overtime to win, that tells you a little bit about our basketball team."

QUOTES FROM COACH JOHN THOMPSON III:

"I think we accomplished everything we wanted to tonight," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. "This is a very good win against a good, well-coached team. You have to be prepared and attentive for 40 or 45 minutes because if you start to relax and make mistakes, they will take advantage at both ends of the court. A lot is made of Missouri's press, but their halfcourt defense is just as effective if not more effective. We got down late in the game, but our players showed great poise."

“They’re tough,” Georgetown coach John Thompson said. “They’re physical like a Big East team. There very similar to teams in our conference in that they can hurt you both offensively and defensively. More specifically, the motion that they use is really similar to some teams that we’ll see.”
